PRESS-RELEASE concerning the membership of Italy

F.E.G.A.T.   -  Press-release

2007-11-21
Report concerning the resignation of their FEGAT membership from Italy.

It is with dissatisfaction the board of FEGAT have received a demand from the Italian amateurs to be excluded from the FEGAT family. However, they have in right time announced their withdrawal and from the 1st of January 2008 they are not any more members. There might be some marks of question from you about the occurred situation and therefore the board of FEGAT distributes this information.

To represent a country, member of the FEGAT, in the world championships the nation must be among the 8 best in the European championship for men held the year before the WC event. In Austria last September Italy was number 16 and last of all the participants. Qualified were (in order of rank from the championship) Austria, Denmark, Norway, Czech Republic, Hungary, The Netherlands, Spain and Germany. Reserves Finland and Belgium. There are no other ways to enter the competition; we have for example no right for the ruling champion (Finland) to participate. Nor has important trotting sport nations as France or Sweden (only Sweden has more than 10’000 amateurs) claimed a place in a championship where they are not entitled to participate, they accept the rules of democracy. It has from Italy been said that they were given the impression on a meeting in Rome in June 2006 that they would be represented. There is no such clause in the minutes, nor does anyone present at this meeting remember such a claim being put forward from Italy.

Italy has tried to influence the organizer of the WC 2008, the US, to send a “wild card” to them that would allow them to participate. I sincerely hope that our friends in the US will stand strong and not turn the competition from a true championship into friendly matches! By performing pressure like this against an organizer the Italian amateur organization uses unworthy and unfair methods that only will hit back at themselves.

The looser is Italy – their active amateurs will not be able to compete in the European championships for men or women, nor in the FEGAT EUROPE CUP or the world championships when held in FEGAT member countries. The board of the Italian amateurs have taken a heavy burden on their back and we hope this is in accordance with the will of the Italian active drivers.
