Re: Yipiee!
I think I know it, but I´m not sure....
This wednesday I´ve a concert with my pupils - I´m probably more nervous than they are, even today !

Aww... that means you're a good conductor! Good luck! We have our Optimist Band Festival performance coming up on Thursday, where we play two songs and then one of the three adjudicators gives us a clinic and the other two send in tapes with their comments so we can become a better band... I just wish more people in the band would take them seriously...
Thank you!
That sounds good (I mean the adjudicators...)! Things like that can help quite a lot! Do you participate at contests too?? We have one in march...
Our concert band would lost to any contest, unfortunately but I went into a scholarship competition last year, didn't win anything though...
If you can't stand the heat... don't tickle the dragon.
At these contests I mentioned you can´t win anything! You just get points and of course one orchestra will have most points, but they are not called the winners. It´s more a contest to check your orchestra a bit...
Ohh... then yeah, Optimist is like that too... you get three stars, one from each adjudicator, and they're either gold, silver, bronze, or honourable mentions. So, if your band is really good, you can get three golds, if it's pretty good, you can get 2 silvers and 1 gold... and if it really sucks, 3 honourable mentions...
If you can't stand the heat... don't tickle the dragon.
Additional to the points we get grades like "excellent", "very good", "good" and "participated" depending on the number of points...
Optimist went well! I found out they changed the marking system so here is what happens:
You're marked on 3 categories (musicality, technique, and intonation/blend) and you can get 1-5 stars on each one... then the stars are averaged out and you get an overall score from each of the three adjudicators. Then, those three overall scores are averaged again to get a final score, and we got a final score of 4 stars (which, I think, is pretty good!). Hooray!
You're marking system is better, I think... more descriptive, not averaged like ours!
Our 100 maximal points we can reach are shared in 10 categories of 10 points each - intonation, sound quality, phrasing, technique, rhythm, tempo, dynamic, interpretation, choice of the piece compared with the ability of the orchestra and overall impression. (I hope my translation is right )
