Few players have as much talent as Tomas Rosicky, which is why the confirmation that Arsenal have signed the creative Czech playmaker has been greeted with almost as much delight as the news that Henry has decided to extend his contract.

But Arsenal fans have to query why Borussia Dortmund were so eager to get rid of Rosicky or indeed why they’ve been trying to offload him for the better part of three seasons.

The reason is partly down to the fact that Rosicky financially crippled the club. When Borussia Dortmund bought him for £18 million – a Bundesliga record - in 2001, they were banking on permanently taking over from Bayern Munich as Germany’s super club. By spending heavily they had already won the Champions League as well as a number of domestic honours.

Rosicky, however, pushed them over the edge. Overburdened by expectations and unable to cope with the departure of manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, Dortmund started to falter and without the backing of regular Champions’ League football, financial meltdown was inevitable.

Through no fault of his own, Rosicky was caught in the middle of their crisis but, with a lucrative contract freshly signed, he had little incentive to move and Dortmund were unable to take one of the greater burdens off their budget.

Inevitably, this made him rather unpopular and with his performances being too unpredictable he was soon tagged as another football mercenary in it only for the money.

Yet Arsene Wenger must be confident of succeeding where others have failed. And there are few better suited than him to turn potential into results. Not only is the list of players he has pushed through at Arsenal alone almost endless but he has shown an ability to mould even the more problematic players like Nicholas Anelka and Robin Van Persie.

Rosicky won’t come with the same characterial baggage as those two but Wenger will still have to work hard with him, focusing particularly on three areas: strength, consistency and tactical placing.

The first challenge is a given for any player coming into English football. The pace at which the game is played is unmatched elsewhere in Europe so Rosicky will not only need time to find his feet but also step up his physical sharpness or otherwise he will be crowded out of games too easily.

Consistency, or lack of it, has been the most frustrating feature of Rosicky’s career in Germany. As one fan described him, he is the “best most unproductive player” capable of alternating spells of grandiose football ingeniousness with long periods where he simply doesn’t look interested.

Wenger will also have to try and figure out where best to play Rosicky. Nominally described as a striker, he clearly isn’t that - as 20 goals in over 150 games in the Bundesliga - but rather an advanced midfielder with the freedom to move behind the main striker. That is the role that he’s often taken up with the Czech Republic to great effect, especially with fellow Dortmund player Jan Koller up-front.

Arsenal, however, don’t play with a target man, which means that Rosicky will have to play on either of the wings, especially as he doesn’t seem to have the strength to take up one of the central midfield roles habitually filled by Gilberto and Cesc Fabregas. This too will need some adapting from his part but Wenger must be confident that ultimately he will have a player capable of taking over the creative mantle of Robert Pires.

Then again, Rosicky’s best season for Dortmund (2001/02 when they won the German league and were beaten in the UEFA Cup final by a Van Persie inspired Feyenoord) came when he was playing behind a strike partnership of Jan Koller and Marcio Amoroso. It could be that Wenger is planning to use him in that role just behind Henry and Adebayor.

Rosicky certainly has the talent to do that, or even take up the role of Henry’s partner in a similar manner as that adopted by Denis Bergkamp in the past. But with the move to Arsenal coming late in the day – he was poised to go to Atletico Madrid before the Spaniards failed to honour the first instalment of the transfer fee – it will be his attitude that will eventually determine whether he succeeds.

"Of the Arsenal front six, Henry and Fabregas are the only guaranteed starters for next season - and I would suggest that Rosicky will join them either as a withdrawn support for Henry or as an attacking midfielder"

Arsenal have signed TomᚠRosický from Borussia Dortmund for a fee believed to be around £6.8m. The Czech player was available at a knock-down price reportedly due to financial problems at the German club, who paid around £18m for him five years ago from Sparta Prague.

Rosicky was quoted as preferring Arsenal over other suitors like Spurs and Real Madrid earlier this year:

"If I had the possibility to choose, I would like to play for Arsenal with Thierry Henry because he is the best,"

So perhaps Henry's contract extension is making an instant impact.

On 5 May there were many reports that Atletico Madrid had signed Rosicky after a year long pursuit (these continental players are tricky to pin down). Spanish Daily 'Marca' claimed that Atletico were paying €10 million for the 25-year-old Rosicky.

But this report - like many in the Spanish football dailies - was anomalous, to say the least.

The Guardian today quote Dortmund official Hans-Joachim Watzke as saying:

"He has travelled with his manager Pavel Paska to London.

"The deal with Atletico is off. There were several other clubs interested but Tomas had his preferences,"

The BBC are suggesting that Rosicky is a direct replacement for Dennis Bergkamp, which kind-of-suggests that Rosicky will be used from the substitutes bench - so perhaps they mean the Bergkamp of a few years ago. In truth Rosicky looks like he has been bought to go straight into the first team - and therefore put a number of players under pressure.

Of the Arsenal front six, Henry and Fabregas are the only guaranteed starters for next season - and I would suggest that Rosicky will join them either as a withdrawn support for Henry or as an attacking midfielder. Interestingly a team with Fabregas and Rosicky in the centre would have little need for a second forward as he is similar enough going forward to warrant comparison with Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard.

Obviously the tactics will evolve for different games but it seems unlikely that these three will be rested for the important games.

So if Rosicky, Henry and Fabregas make up three of the front six what of the other three? It seems likely that Gilberto or Diaby will play as an anchor leaving two places. The implication is that there will be surplus wide men and forwards.

Pires, Hleb, Ljungberg, Reyes, van Persie, Flamini, Walcott and Adebayor will basically be chasing two spots, assuming Lauren is no longer considered a midfield candidate. Hleb will probably justify one on a regular basis and hopefully Walcott will be ready to play 20-30 times for Arsenal.

As a result I would expect two of the other six to move on this summer, with Pires the most obvious likely casualty. It would be unsurprising if Reyes - who has often disappointed since his £10.5m transfer were to join him.

Some reports describe Rosicky as 'diminutive' (although he is also reported as being 5'10"), so perhaps Arsenal have signed a scheming midfielder who is similar to Paul Scholes. If this is the case then Arsenal have a stone cold bargain and the ideal stepping stone for a renewed challenge to the top three.

Ballack at Chelsea, Berbatov at Spurs and Rosicky at Arsenal - how will Manchester United and Liverpool respond?

Wenger: Rosicky is new Pires
Story Tools:

Arsene Wenger today revealed he swooped for Tomas Rosicky as soon as he discovered Robert Pires was leaving Arsenal and believes he has found the ideal replacement for the French winger.

Pires ended his six-year stay at Highbury last week when he agreed a two-year deal with Spanish Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal.

But in readiness for the 32-year-old's departure, Wenger was already tracking Rosicky who eventually signed for £7million from Borussia Dortmund 11 days ago.

And although the Gunners boss admits the two players are not identical in style, he believes Rosicky, 25, can fulfil a similar role at the club.

"I took Rosicky to replace Robert. I moved very quickly after Robert told me he would go," he told the club's official website.

"I wanted to secure (Rosicky) before the World Cup starts. He is a little bit similar position-wise to Robert.

"He can play in Dennis Bergkamp's role, on the left, in a 4-3-3 or central. But he is slightly a different style.

"Rosicky is an accelerator of the game, a guy who can create things, see things quickly and whose best years are ahead of him."

Rosicky beurteilt Bundesliga negativ - «Andere Dimension»
