Palestinians injured as new clashes erupt in West Bank, Gaza

A number of Palestinians were reported injured as new clashes broke out across the occupied Palestinian territory on Saturday after three Palestinians were shot dead over alleged stabbing attacks.

In central Hebron, Israeli forces shot and injured three Palestinians with live rounds and 15 others with rubber-coated steel bullets during clashes at the entrance to Shuhada Street and in the city's the Bab al-Zawiya area, medics said.

Two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces on Saturday evening after allegedly carrying out separate stabbing attacks in Hebron and Qalandia in the occupied West Bank.

Their deaths bring the total number of Palestinians killed on Saturday to five, in each case after they allegedly attempted to carry out stabbing attacks, although Palestinian sources have contested that at least one of those attacks actually took place.

Lawyer 'shocked' by treatment of Palestinian teenage detainees

A Palestinian Authority lawyer on Saturday said he was "shocked by the horrible things I heard and saw" after speaking to five Palestinian teenagers recently detained by Israeli forces from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Hussein al-Sheikh, a lawyer for the PA Committee for Prisoners' Affairs, said in a statement that the detainees he met with in Israel's Etzion detention center had been beaten by Israeli soldiers and attacked by police dogs.

He met with Muhammad Jamal Khalaf, 14, from al-Ezariya in East Jersualem, Wadee Nasser al-Jundi, 15 from Arrub refugee camp near Hebron, Muhammad Salih Ghur, 17 from Arrub, Asif Dakhlallah Umour, 14 from Bethlehem and Abd al-Majid Younis Jaafra, 16 from Hebron.

The enablers of Israeli terrorism

“These attacks,” intoned a pro-Nazi Protestant minister as he bewailed the killing of Germans during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, “were unprovoked attempts to murder innocent civilians, or police or soldiers who were trying to maintain peace and order.”

Decrying international criticism of the German army that had laid siege to the ghetto, the minister was particularly incensed at local Jews who had described attacks against German settlers (who lived on land, and often in houses, expropriated from former Jewish residents) as acts of self-defense.

Videos challenge Israeli police account of shootings

It has been called the “smartphone intifada”. After a sharp escalation in violence between Palestinians and Israelis in recent weeks, shocking scenes captured on video have spread across social media.

According to Israeli human rights organisations, several such videos challenge the accuracy of official Israeli accounts of the circumstances in which police have killed or injured Palestinians.

The footage, the nine groups said in a statement this week, provided concrete evidence that police were “quick to shoot to kill” rather than arrest Palestinians in Jerusalem and Israel who were suspected of involvement in attacks on Israeli Jews.

Israel: the lynch-up nation

Israel was always a nasty place, with blatant racism, discrimination, occupation and war.

But lynching people in the streets is justifiably regarded as one of the nastiest habits in history, and it has now become a national sport in Israel.

Since I wrote a small piece about “The Lynch-Up Nation” last Tuesday (see below) – things are getting even worse. Four Arabs were lynched just yesterday (Saturday 17/10) – and one Jew from Bat Yam was also executed in the street by trigger-happy police in similar circumstances. Of course – only in the case of killing a Jew we hear the standard announcement that “the circumstances of the killing will be investigated”. The concept of an innocent Arab victim simply doesn’t exist in the Israeli sphere of media, police, courts, etc. To say nothing about almost ALL Zionist parties, which compete in incitement for more killings.

Settlers forcibly evict Palestinian families from Silwan homes

At least nine Palestinians were left homeless on Monday after settlers escorted by Israeli security personnel forcibly evicted them from their homes in the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

The Silwan-based Wadi Hilweh Information Center said a large group of Israeli border police and officers escorted staff from the far-right Israeli Ateret Cohanim organization to the Batn al-Hawa area of the neighborhood.

The Silwan-based Wadi Hilweh Information Center reports that a large Israeli police force, accompanied by an overhead helicopter, police dogs and staff members of the settler association Ateret Cohanim, raided the Batan- al Hawa neighbourhood of Silwan on Monday morning. They surrounded two homes belonging to the Abu Nab family to execute evacuation orders in favour of Ateret Cohanim, which claims ownership of the homes.

Palestinian dies after checkpoint delay

Huda Muhammad Darwish, age 65, suffered a severe asthma attack at approximately 1am Monday morning at her home in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Issawiya. Family members rushed to take her to the nearby Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus. Israeli police and border police officers, however, held the Darwish vehicle up at the checkpoint located at Issawiya's entrance. A verbal altercation ensued between the Israeli police officers and Darwish family members, and for fifteen essential minutes the car was not allowed to pass.

Darwish was finally allowed to leave Issawiya but died on the way to Hadassah Hospital, located mere minutes away from her home.

Recasting the rules: An intellectual intifada in the offing

My first stop, after living for 22 years in a refugee camp in Gaza, was the city of Seattle, a pleasant, green city, where people drink too much coffee to cope with the long, cold, grey winters. There, for the first time, I stood before an audience outside Palestine, to speak about Palestine.

Here, I learned, too, of the limits imposed on the Palestinian right to speak, of what I could or should not say. Platforms for an impartial Palestinian discourse were extremely narrow to begin with, and when any was available, Palestinians hardly took center stage.

Israeli mob attacks dying Eritrean refugee after soldier is killed

A gunman opened fire at the central bus station in Bir al-Saba (Beer Sheva), a city in the south of present-day Israel, on Sunday evening, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding up to 11 other people.

The assailant shot and killed a soldier and then “snatched his M-16 rifle” before opening fire on the others, most of whom were “members of Israel’s security forces,” Israel’s Ynet reported. Walla! News reported that four of the injured were soldiers.

The war of information in Israel and Palestine

Recent headlines by Western news outlets, such as the BBC, CNN and The Telegraph, in the coverage of the recent spate of violence currently unfolding in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory have tended to focus on the Israeli victims of the unrest. On the other hand, little critical analysis has been dedicated to the deaths of any of the 44 Palestinians killed by Israel since the beginning of the month.

http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=768350

BBC implies Palestinian dead are Israeli

A fresh Israeli onslaught against Palestinians began at the start of October, resulting in almost 50 Palestinians killed in just under three weeks.

Nearly 10 Israelis were slain during that same period.

While extreme and sustained Israeli violence against Palestinians is a routine feature of Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, just as predictable is the BBC’s coverage of it.

And so it comes as no surprise to witness the BBC focusing almost exclusively on Palestinian attacks on Israelis while presenting Israel, not only as the victim, but the sole victim of October’s violence — while mentioning Palestinian fatalities only in passing.

NYTimes: Report accurately on Palestine/Israel

No media organization is more influential in shaping the way American policymakers and news outlets think about Israel and Palestine than the New York Times.

But with some notable exceptions, the Times has done a shamefully poor job of including the historical and political context readers need to understand the roots of the current uprising.

Over the last 2 weeks, over 2,000 Palestinians have been injured and over 41 killed, including at least 8 children. Eight Jewish Israelis have been killed, and one asylum seeker from Eritrea. Though it can be difficult to make sense of these difficult days, the message from Palestinians is clear: they want freedom, justice, and dignity.

Yet, the Times’ headlines consistently frame Israel as the victim, completely misrepresenting an uprising which is a response to decades of displacement, occupation and repression.

Unless we put pressure on the New York Times to accurately report what is happening, the story of Palestinians struggling for freedom will be obscured in the paper of record.

Netanyahu speech blames Palestinians for Holocaust

Secretary-General of the PLO, Saeb Erekat, on Wednesday strongly condemned comments by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the 37th World Zionist Congress which blamed the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem for actions taken by Nazi Germany under leader Adolf Hitler.

http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=768397

Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly asserted that Adolf Hitler had no intention of exterminating Europe’s Jews until a Palestinian persuaded him to do it.

The Israeli prime minister’s attempt to whitewash Hitler and lay the blame for the Holocaust at the door of Palestinians signals a major escalation of his incitement against and demonization of the people living under his country’s military and settler-colonial rule.

It also involves a good deal of Holocaust denial.

Israeli crackdown turning life in al-Issawiya into 'nightmare'

As Israeli authorities increase restrictions on Palestinian neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem, residents of al-Issawiya say humiliating inspections by Israeli forces have turned their lives into a “nightmare."

"The Israeli occupation is trying to practice a policy of humiliation at the military checkpoints in the main exits of al-Issawiya," said Hani al-Issawi, a member of a local committee to defend land in in the town.

"Residents are not allowed to leave the village in groups. Every single person must undergo inspections," he added.

Men, including the elderly, are forced to pull up their shirts up and sometimes take their trousers down upon entrance and exit to the neighborhood, while many undergo physical inspections.

Female residents of the town are often searched by female soldiers who decide whether to carry out physical inspections or to check their bags and identification documents.

Barbarity on Israeli streets

A confession. Exactly fifteen years ago, on 13 October 2000, I had a moment of doubt about my commitment to the struggle of Palestinian liberation. Hundreds of angry Palestinians lynched and killed two lost Israeli soldiers. Lynching someone, whether in Oklahoma or Ramallah, has always been in my eyes the expression of barbarity that hides our humanity. If the barbarity of the Israeli colonial occupation has rubbed off on the Palestinian victims, have they lost their humanity? Can the colonial conflict deteriorate into shocking barbarity? And if that is the case, do I still have a place in this conflict? After some time, reason took precedence over gut feelings:Israel's colonial occupation remains the mother of all barbarities whilst wild behaviour on the part of the victims is simply a side effect.

Palestinians need hope, not calm

Since the current upsurge of violence in Israel and occupied Palestine began, numerous foreign leaders, as well as the UN Security Council, have cited the urgent need to restore “calm”. It is not calm, a euphemism for Palestinian submission, which is urgently needed but rather genuine and credible hope for freedom and some measure of justice.

Israeli mistaken for Palestinian 'attacker' shot dead in Jerusalem

In the midst of what has become known in Israel as the "knifers' Intifada", an unusual scene unfolded in Ramat Gan, where many of the residents are Iraqi Jews. A small slender woman was protecting a man lying on the ground who was being pursued by a mob of 40 people, including a few soldiers, who wanted to lynch him.

While lying on the ground, pepper gas was sprayed into his eyes at close range. He managed to whisper to his guardian angel: "I am a Jew." When the mob finally got the message, he was left alone.

He was chased because almost all the Iraqi Jews look like Palestinians; in fact, most of us Jews in Israel look like Palestinians. The only Jews who are "protected" are the Mizrahi Orthodox Jews who don the same clothes their Ashkenazi predecessors wore in 17th-century Europe, dismissing their traditional "Arab" dress.

Bibi Butchers History

Bibi Netanyahu continues his (vain)glorious attempt to ride roughshod over Jewish history with his recent speech to the World Jewish Congress. By now, you’ve heard the Israeli leader’s false claim that it was Hajj Amin al-Hussein, not Hitler himself, who planted the idea of exterminating European Jewry. Bibi even manages to quote their entire conversation, which is quite a historical feat considering there is no historical record whatsoever of what they actually said.

Palestinian resistance: messages from the streets

Many did not anticipate the current courageous, comprehensive, and vital reaction of the Palestinian people to Israeli policies and practices in Jerusalem. Young Palestinians from the West Bank and Jerusalem, Gaza and Israel have overcome humiliating internal divisions to defend Jerusalem as a national cornerstone of the Palestinian liberation project – politically, religiously, symbolically, morally and ethically. These young Palestinians exceed the limits of “rationality” and are acting on strong convictions and a deep sense of national awareness.

Jerusalem chaos is a warning of things to come

Among Palestinians and Israelis, the recent upsurge in violence has been variously described as the children’s, lone-wolf, Jerusalem and smartphone intifadas. Each describes a distinguishing feature of this round of clashes.

The steady erosion of Fatah and Hamas’ authority during the post-Oslo years, as the Palestinian factions proved incapable of protecting their people from the structural violence of the occupation, has driven Palestine’s orphaned children to the streets, armed with stones.

The growing hopelessness and sense of abandonment have led a few so-called “lone wolves” to vent their fury on Israelis with improvised weapons such as knives, screwdrivers and cars. These attacks have attracted the most publicity, becoming the equivalent of the second intifada’s suicide bomber. But they serve chiefly as a barometer of Palestinian despair.

Another witness told Ma'an that he saw a schoolgirl with a schoolbag on her back trying to cross the Israeli checkpoint near the Ibrahimi mosque.

"An Israeli soldier asked her to take the knife out of her bag, then he immediately fired gunshots into the air," the witness said. "Seconds later the schoolgirl was lying on the ground bleeding."

Since 1 October, Israeli forces have killed more than 50 Palestinians, including at least 10 children, across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. According to initial data from Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCI-P), more than 100 Palestinian children have sustained injuries in that period — and the number keeps climbing.

Israeli Racial Profiling: Guilty of Breathing While Arab

One of the unintended results of the current round of mayhem in Israel and Palestine has been a reminder of the rampant racism within Israeli society. The racism is not just directed at Palestinians, as one might expect, but against anyone who looks “Arab,” which includes Mizrahi Jews. The rampage of violence of the past few weeks offers numerous examples not just of Israeli Jews who murdered Palestinians in cold blood, but of Ashkenazi Jews who attacked Mizrahi Jews, assuming they were Palestinian.

Nearly 1,000 Palestinians detained in October

Just short of 1,000 Palestinians, including 147 children, have been detained by Israeli forces since the beginning of the month, Palestinian prisoners' rights group Addameer said Monday.

The group's advocacy coordinator, Rafat Sub Laban, told Ma'an that at least 988 Palestinians had been detained in October, including 578 in the occupied West Bank, 258 in East Jerusalem, and 152 in Israel.

Palestinian viewpoints on the intifada from the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon

Whether the clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank are the long-awaited “Third Intifada” is the question being asked by virtually every journalist covering the Middle East. (It takes stabbings and house burnings to get the media’s attention. Once it stops, attention will swing back to ISIS and the neglected refugees at sea—leaving the Palestinians to suffer their decades-long occupation alone, once again.)

Even among Palestinians, the answer to that question varies. The youngest are more likely to say yes, and to glory in the feeling of empowerment, however temporary. The older the person I interviewed, with some exceptions, the more jaded they became. However, there is one common truth among the people on the “street”: The uprising is once again bringing them together (at least in spirit) across borders—from East Jerusalem, to Gaza City, to Beirut.

Israel and the Rotten Soul of the West

The rotten soul of the Western political establishment is never more exposed than when it comes to the issue of Palestine. It is here where the hypocrisy, double standards, and political cowardice that is its truth is at its most extreme.

Bad enough that the Palestinian people have been forced to endure a decades-long negation of their human, natural, and national rights; the injustice they have suffered is compounded tenfold by the complicity of the West in denying their rightful status as an oppressed people struggling against a cruel and vindictive oppressor. Stripped of all of the embroidery and obfuscation that has been allowed to distort the contours of this struggle, here lies the root of the issue and the biblical suffering that has and continues to flow from it.

This conflict is not and never has been about Israel’s right to exist or Israel’s security. It is not and never has been about Hamas or its Charter. It is not even about a two state or a one state solution – at least not anymore it is not. It is about whether we take a stand on the side of an oppressed people or with their oppressor.

In this regard we must give thanks to Malcolm X for washing the bullshit from our eyes: “If you aren’t careful the newspapers will have you hating the people being oppressed, and loving the people doing the oppressing.”

Confronting the obvious truth: Palestinian Authority vs. the people

Saeb Erekat is an enigmatic character. Despite minimal popularity among Palestinians, he is omnipresent, appears regularly on television and speaks with the moral authority of an accomplished leader whose legacy is rife with accolades and an astute, unwavering vision.

...In a recent interview with Al-Jazeera’s ‘UpFront’, Erekat warned that the PA was on the verge of shutting down, as if the very existence of the PA was a virtue in itself. Established in 1994 as a transitional political body that would guide the process of Palestinian independence, the PA morphed to become a security arm that served as a first line of defense for the Israeli army, in addition to guarding its own interests. Billions of dollars later, and after intensive military training provided by the US, the UK, Italy, and other western and ‘moderate’ Arab countries, the PA security forces have done a splendid job of cracking down on any dissent among Palestinians.......
.......After reiterating his support for the two-state solution which is now but a fading mirage, Erekat told Al-Jazeera, “We are fully supporting our people and their cry for freedom.”

I think not, Mr. Erekat. Twenty years is long enough to show that those who have taken part in their people’s oppression, cannot possibly be the advocates of their people’s freedom.
