Also nochmal:

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Zitat:
Sales of 16 of the top 25 comics fell in January, with only four titles demonstrating gains in the number of units sold. All four of the titles demonstrating gains were Marvels; Amazing Spider-Man #528, which provided the conclusion to The Other crossover event and hints at Spidey's new costume, had the biggest percentage gain though a couple additional The Other-related titles, Peter David's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Reginald Hudlin's Marvel Knights Spider-Man, also posted solid increases. Fans in the comic book blogosphere have been merciless in their dissection of The Other, but it does appear to have spurred sales.

Marvel also managed to land the first issue of three new mini-series (Ultimate Extinction #1, X-Men 198 #1, and X-Men End Men & X-Men #1) in the top 25. DC Comics held onto the top 2 spots on the list while placing 9 books in the top 25 (the rest were all Marvels). In dollar terms January was a good month for DC, which closed the gap in overall dollar market share with Marvel from 5 points in December to just under 1.5 points in January.

Dark Horse's Serenity topped the graphic novel list with just over 8,000 sold. DC dominated the graphic novel top 10 with seven titles (including the DC Universe Stories of Alan Moore, which came in second), while Dark Horse had two and Marvel one.Zitat:
Sales of comic periodicals and graphic novels were both up substantially in January when compared with the first month in 2005. Comic periodicals jumped an impressive 19%, while graphic novels grew by 15%. A substantial portion of the increase in periodical sales was due to year-over-year price increases, but the number of units sold also rose.

Typically January is a month when sales slow down and periodical sales did register a 17% decline from December to January, but graphic novel sales declined only 7.7% thanks to a strong list of titles debuting in January including Dark Horse's Serenity, which took the top spot.

Combined comic and graphic novel sales in the direct market were up a whopping 19% from January of 2005. Combined comic and graphic novel sales declined 15.6 % from December, but the drop was far smaller than what occurred in the first month of 2005 when sales slipped a dramatic 26.5% from December of 2004.http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/8247.html

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Marvel's big event for the month is the concluding chapters of
Spider-Man crossover "The Other", but there's also the launch of Warren
Ellis and Stuart Immonen's NEXTWAVE to watch out for. Plus there's a
whole range of new miniseries - ARES, DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON, DEAD
GIRL, DOC SAMSON, NEW X-MEN, SABLE & FORTUNE, SENTINEL SQUAD O*N*E,
ULTIMATE EXTINCTION, X-MEN: THE 198 and the third volume of X-MEN: THE
END all make their debut.

Once again, Marvel edge out DC in dollar share, but only by 36.79% to
35.30%. In unit share, the margin is much more comfortable - 42.17% to
37.35%. It's worth mentioning, as well, that Marvel had an unusually
high number of missing books this month. A whopping sixteen titles are
down in the "Skip month" section for January, double the number for
December. Of those, one is on hiatus, two are bimonthly, and one is...
well, KABUKI, which ships when the moon is waxing and the bamboo is
ripe. But that still leaves twelve comics that failed to turn up as
advertised, compared to just five in the previous month.

As always, thanks to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their
figures for these calculations.

Once again, DC take the top two slots with INFINITE CRISIS #4 and
ALL-STAR SUPERMAN #2. So we pick up with...

1 year (-21.8%)

Issue #14 picks up 2,283 re-orders, which are included in the numbers
above. Strangely enough, this means the book has now gone slightly up
from the previous month. It doesn't affect the overall trend, though,
as the book continues to slip back from its initial high sales. Of
course, a lot of the drop-off is due to the variant covers programme
ending, and the book is still selling more than twice as many copies as
it used to in its previous incarnation, so there's plenty to be happy
about here.

4. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Jan 06 Amazing Spider-Man #528 - 95,415 ( +6.1%)
6 mnth (+30.5%)
1 year (+19.5%)
2 year ( +9.2%)

The final month of "The Other" sees a healthy climb. AMAZING is always
the highest selling Spider-Man book, and also had the advantage in
January of being promoted as a key issue in the storyline. Meanwhile,
variant covers continue to top up the sales of earlier issues: issue
#526 picks up another 8,995 copies to chart at number 158, and issue
#527 sells a further 10,661 to chart at number 146.

With the earlier chapters, the variant covers were released on a delayed
schedule so that they didn't show up until the next month's chart. This
time round, the variants seem to have made it out during January. But
nonetheless, it's still a significant increase over earlier months of
the same story - unequivocally a success.

The much-delayed Ultimate Galactus Trilogy continues with ULTIMATE
EXTINCTION. Once again, retailers seem happy to treat it as a fresh
issue #1 and bump the orders up considerably - although not quite to the
levels of ULTIMATE SECRET #1 last March. Still a very healthy number,
and the highest of this month's Ultimate books (though ULTIMATES would
have been higher if it had shipped).

Another nominal Decimation crossover, although the connection is less
than obvious on the page. It makes no difference to sales, anyhow. A
new creative team is just around the corner.

8. FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN
Oct 05 Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 - 100,430

Jan 06 Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4 - 78,672 ( -3.2%)

More of "The Other." December's issue #3 ships another 8,995 in variant
covers, to place at number 159. Issue #4, on the other hand, gets its
variants onto this month's chart.

These are very healthy numbers for the opening of a new title,
obviously, and now the question is what happens when it turns into an
ordinary book. February's issue #5 will be the first issue without the
benefit of a crossover tie-in.

6 mnth (+47.3%)
1 year (+21.2%)

The last issue under this title, before it changes its name to
SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN in February. It's also bringing up the rear in
the "Other" crossover for the fourth month in a row. As with the other
Spider-Man books, the variant cover for this month's issue came out in
time to be included in the number above, but delayed variants continue
to top up sales from earlier months: issue #21 charts at number 164 with
8,440 more sales.

A second printing of issue #20 picks up 1,322 re-orders to chart at
number 274. Those are probably more conventional re-orders, given that
MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN was significantly under-ordered compared to
other parts of the crossover.

Re-orders at that level often go unnoticed, because they don't make it
into the top 300. In December, for example, the number 300 book sold
1,674 copies. But January was a very quiet month - the number 300 book,
TWILIGHT WAR X #2, sold only 929. This means there are quite a few
low-level re-orders clogging up the listings, which normally would have
disappeared beneath the radar.

These are the lowest numbers we've seen on the charts since May 2005
(when DRAWN & QUARTERLY #8 scraped into the number 300 position on the
strength of 860 copies). Every chart since then has stayed above the
1,000 mark.

Anyway. Back to superheroes!

Drifting gently down. Next month sees an Apocalypse storyline, so we'll
see if something a little more conventional can spike the sales. A
change of creative team is also on the way.

Issue #180 picks up 1,173 re-orders to chart at number 287. Again, these
are re-orders which would frequently fly beneath the radar, and they
don't really affect the overall pattern.

ULTIMATE X-MEN returns after a one-month hiatus with new creative team
Robert Kirkman and Tom Raney. It doesn't seem to make any difference at
all, which is probably good news for Marvel, suggesting that the title
is strong enough now to hold up regardless of creator changes.

13. X-MEN: DEADLY GENESIS
Nov 05 Deadly Genesis #1 (of 6) - 114,431
Dec 05 Deadly Genesis #2 (of 6) - 80,083 (-30.0%)
Jan 06 Deadly Genesis #3 (of 6) - 73,401 ( -8.3%)

Marvel have made no secret of the fact that they were expecting bigger
things of this book, which is why they've resorted to basically
revealing the plot and yelling "Look, it's important, honest!" Sales
level out a bit with issue #3, and they're certainly good numbers by
most standards. But Marvel seem to have been hoping for this to be more
of an event. The problem, perhaps, is that they churn out so many
utterly skippable X-MEN miniseries - there's another one launching this
month, for example - that it no longer even crosses anyone's mind that
they might actually matter.

On the plus side, re-order activity is solid. Issue #1 picks up
re-orders of 4,198 to chart at number 201 (albeit with multiple covers),
and issue #2 picks up another 4,485 sales to chart at number 194. So
perhaps retailers are starting to be convinced.

Still dropping, and while 70,000 is far from a bad number, I remain
deeply sceptical about the wisdom of spinning the storyline off into a
separate series. Issue #37 picks up 3,150 reorders to chart at number
219, mind you, so maybe it's starting to get somewhere.

16. X-MEN: THE 198
Jan 06 The 198 #1 (of 5) - 68,698

Another month, another X-Men spin-off miniseries. This is a good debut
number, possibly helped by the Decimation tie-in (although, as noted
above, it hasn't made much difference to other titles).

The second half of the two-part crossover, and with sales holding up
remarkably well for the second issue, Marvel's bizarre non-numbering
strategy may have been vindicated. Last month's issue scrapes onto the
chart at number 297 with re-orders of 954.

The third and final volume of Chris Claremont's 18-issue X-MEN: THE END

fair enough, because it's all one story and the Books don't tell
self-contained stories. It's hard to imagine anyone jumping on board at
this point.

End of series, hell freezes over. When Marvel launched this book, they
can't have imagined that their four-issue miniseries would finish up
with issue #6, almost four years later, placing below the second issue
of a Quicksilver miniseries.

hardly exceptional by the standards of this title (before it went into a

Issue #1 picks up 2,838 re-orders to chart at number 224, but this

standards, and more than a little worrying. The book needs to level out

For once, the "sold out" press release is for real - this is a genuine
sleeper hit. No massive hype, no big-name creative team, nothing really
to boost its sales aside from a tie-in with ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR.
And it climbs 8.4% with its second issue, something that's almost
impossible to do these days. Amazing.

There's now a reprint of issue #1 with a variant cover, so look for
significant re-orders to hit the chart in future months.

established as characters. This is the standard "first issue of an

This month it's the 2099 Universe, but it doesn't make a great deal of
difference to sales. We're still locked in the book's normal range.

Once again, EXILES impresses with its consistent sales. Six Marvel
titles show a year-on-year increase in January. Three of them do it by
renumbering; two of them are Spider-Man books getting a crossover sales
boost. Only EXILES has achieved a year-on-year increase without stunts.

If you're wondering, Marvel only have three books which are up over the
last six months - two Spider-Man crossover titles, and X-MEN: THE END
benefitting from a renumbering. Only two books are up from two years
ago - AMAZING, thanks to the crossover, and IRON MAN, thanks to a
relaunch. Everything else is either going down, or its on a skip month.

59. MYTHOS
Jan 06 X-Men - 30,634

Hmm. This is the first in a series of painted origin stories of Marvel
heroes, reinterpreted to try and make them more accessible to film
audiences. It's a $3.99 book, giving it a number 38 place on the dollar
rankings. A middling number - could have been a lot worse, but I
suspect Marvel may have been hoping for better. But it's hard to see
why direct market audiences should be interested in a comic whose
admitted purpose is to promote the characters to casual readers.

65. NEXTWAVE
Jan 06 Nextwave #1 - 28,545

Erk. Despite a reasonable amount of promotion, this is not a good start
at all. It's lower than THING #1, and even marginally below NICK FURY'S
HOWLING COMMANDOS #1. The first issue of SHE-HULK beat it by 9,000. It
can't have helped that solicitations wrongly listed this as a
twelve-issue miniseries, but that can't be the sole reason - DEFENDERS
#1 beat this number by 11,000. Come to think of it, it's also a couple
of thousand below PUNISHER VS BULLSEYE #1. You get the point.

Personally, I rather enjoyed it, but clearly retailers weren't convinced
at all. Things will have to turn around sharpish. I suspect the
problem here is that people expect Warren Ellis to laugh AT superheroes
rather than WITH them, and the superhero audience just isn't feeling
sufficiently self-loathing right now to find that an attractive
prospect. It's debatable whether the comic really does approach
superheroes that way - I'd say it doesn't, personally - but it's the
perception that drives sales more than the reality. And the perception
of Warren Ellis comedy superhero comics, I suspect, may not be in tune
with the retro-crossover zeitgeist.

A tie-in issue of MARVEL MILESTONES, featuring stories about Bloodstone,
X-51 and Captain Marvel, charts at number 221 with orders of 3,075.

Levelling out. Not bad numbers considering that it hasn't been pushed
much.

Nudging slightly up, for no apparent reason. There's a guest appearance
by Spider-Man, but he doesn't usually make much difference. Remarkably
stable in its range - the six month drop is misleading, because it's
drawing a comparison with the HOUSE OF M crossover issue

84. OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

First of a twelve-part series with the odd plan of focussing on the
characters they haven't already covered - which means almost none of the
major names are included, but it's great news if you've been hanging on
for a profile of China Force or the B-Sides. In all fairness, Marvel
deserve credit for not simply recycling old material and selling the
same profiles to the same readers twice - which they could quite easily
have done. But ironically, I suspect the market is going to punish them
for it, because I can't help thinking they've ended up with a book of
very marginal appeal.

Until now, the HANDBOOK has hovered up and down according to subject
matter. Presumably it'll now go into the usual sales decline, and
23,423 isn't a very good start for a twelve-issue miniseries. But then
again, it's a very odd book, so it could always do something unexpected
and level out at 15K - which seems to be their bedrock sales level for
deeply unfashionable subject matter. Marvel would probably regard that
as acceptable, given the $3.99 price tag and the lack of original art.

98. ARES
Jan 06 Ares #1 (of 5) - 20,541

About what you'd expect for an underpublicised miniseries about a fairly
minor character. However, Marvel have now announced that Ares is
joining one of their major teams - presumably the Avengers - so we might
see a bit more attention paid to later issues. Could be worth keeping an
eye on.

104. ASTONISHING X-MEN SAGA
Jan 06 Astonishing X-Men Saga - 18,920

A clip book recapping the first twelve issues of ASTONISHING X-MEN, in
the style of the similar 1980s recap book MARVEL SAGA. I'm genuinely
shocked that it sold this well - are there really 19,000 people willing
to pay $3.99 for a bunch of clipped panels and a plot recap? That's
over 10% of the audience who bought the original book! I can't see it
myself, but I suppose the retailers must have their reasons.

Very unusually, DOC SAMSON changes writer with issue #3. This may
suggest a troubled production.

into it.

116. SABLE & FORTUNE
Jan 06 Sable & Fortune #1 (of 4) - 15,451

Ouch. Even by the standards of Marvel's obscure character minis, this
is a very dodgy number. If the hope was that Ultimate Silver Sable

This is starting to get silly. Most of the books down at this end of
the chart have at least a reasonable hope of making their money back in
digest or trade paperback format. SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED doesn't get
reprinted anywhere, and I'm honestly amazed that it's still going.
Issue #14 has a David Finch story, so it'll be interesting to see if he
makes any difference.

128. BOOK OF LOST SOULS

Er... levelling out? Perhaps, but this is still plummetting towards the
10,000 mark at high speed, and it's already lost almost half of the
initial audience. Bad, bad numbers. Of course, it's an Icon book, so
the normal economics don't apply.

Horrendous figures. It's solicited through to issue #20, which is the
end of the current storyline. With sales like this, surely that's got
to be it. No official cancellation announcement, though, so we'll just
have to wait and see whether issue #21 appears in the May solicitaitons.

Dec 05 Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane #1 - 11,171

Jan 06 X-Men & Power Pack #4 (of 4) - 8,590 ( +2.5%)

Apparently Cyclops is slightly more popular than I thought. There's
another miniseries scheduled for the spring, so presumably POWER PACK
must have done respectably in digest format.

177. MARVEL SPOTLIGHT
Dec 05 John Cassaday & Sean McKeever - 9,763
Jan 06 Warren Ellis & Jim Cheung - 6,843 (-29.9%)

Yikes. These are appalling numbers already, but the book is still
solicited through to May (Daniel Way & Olivier Coipel). With at least
another four issues to go, this could reach terrifying depths.

I suspect this is a format whose time has passed. In this day and age,
they'd be better off just putting all the material on their website. Is
anyone really so short of Warren Ellis publicity interviews that they
feel the need to pay money for them?

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Zitat:

Zitat:
AMAZING SPIDER-MANASM kommt dank "THE OTHER" nahe an die 100000 ran.

Bendis is back, better than ever.

Zitat:
Was wäre eure Traumbesetzung gewesen?

Zitat:
X-MEN: THE 198Ist die Serie gut? Traue Hine nicht über den Weg. Muniz ist nicht schlecht.

Zitat:
ULTIMATE X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR Unglaubliche Zahlen für ein angeblich sooooo schwaches X-over. Carey und Marvel wird es freuen.

Zitat:

SPIDER-MAN/BLACK CAT: EVIL THAT MEN DO

Hier wäre Way der richtige Mann. Daniel "Punisher, Bullseye, Ghost Rider" Way.

Zitat:
Abwarten. Qualitätsmässig war dieser Schritt wohl der Todesstoss. R.I.P. EXILES.

I don't think so.

Zitat:

Both fingers crossed.

Zitat:
BOOKS OF DOOMSoll sehr sehr boring sein.

Zitat:
RUNAWAYSGute Serie und RELATIV gesunde Zahlen. Sollte mit der Zeit noch besser werden.

Zitat:
CABLE & DEADPOOLMein Liebling. Yay! Deadpool bei X-Factor!!!!

Zitat:
NEW THUNDERBOLTS
bald weg vom tisch...Meinetwegen

Zitat:

MARVEL TEAM-UP

Bye, bye
