MARVEL CHECKLIST - MARVEL-COMICS

Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Zitat:

Zitat:

Zitat:
Bin sehr darauf gespannt!du bist vorgerwarnt

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Zitat:

Zitat:
V.a. Quesadas Zeichnungen waren wunderbar.

Wieso?

Zitat:

Hier wäre Way der richtige Mann. Daniel "Punisher, Bullseye, Ghost Rider" Way. Hmm ...

Noch mal Way. Prinzipiell sehr gute Story, allerdings stellenweise doch sehr wenig Text.

Jeden Monat dieselbe entschuldigung

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

February is traditionally a quiet month for comics, and this is no
exception. The big news is the return from hiatus of Joss Whedon and
John Cassaday's ASTONISHING X-MEN. There are no new ongoing titles this
month, but there's the debut of Spider-Man's new costume, and a string
of new miniseries - the most notable being STORM, leading into this
summer's wedding with the Black Panther.

So far as the market share is concerned, it's a clear win for Marvel, by
the largest margin in quite some time. In dollar share, they beat DC by
39.6% to 32.7%. In unit share, it's 45.3% to 34.3%. For a month which
is basically "business as usual", this is good news for Marvel. Of
course, March will be much closer, because that's DC's "One Year Later"
promotion.

As always, thanks to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their
figures for these calculations.

1. ASTONISHING X-MEN
Feb 05 Astonishing X-Men #8 - 153,395 ( -0.0%)
Mar 05 Astonishing X-Men #9 - 135,325 (-11.8%)
Apr 05 n/a
May 05 Astonishing X-Men #10 - 156,298 (+15.5%)

Jan 06 n/a
Feb 06 Astonishing X-Men #13 - 140,655 ( +4.4%)
6 mnth ( +4.4%)
1 year ( -8.2%)

Returning to the schedules after a five month absence, ASTONISHING gets
a boost. It's done better than this in the past year, but only with the
help of variant covers. Whedon and Cassaday are still proving a big
draw as the book enters its second season.

2. NEW AVENGERS
Feb 02 Avengers #51 - 54,381
Feb 03 Avengers #64 - 52,753
Feb 04 Avengers #78 - 58,798

Feb 06 New Avengers #16 - 121,492 ( -2.1%)
6 mnth ( -17.6%)
1 year ( -18.4%)
2 year (+106.6%)

Continuing the slow downward drift which we've seen ever since the
variant covers promotion ended. But these are still excellent numbers
compared to the book's previous incarnation, and a major role in the
CIVIL WAR crossover is just around the corner. Issue #15 picks up 2,385
reorders to chart at number 263 - as always, those sales are included in
the number above.

hätte gedacht hier würde es einen + geben

5. ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS HULK
Dec 05 Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk #1 (of 6) - 115,492
Jan 06 n/a
Feb 06 Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk #2 (of 6) - 97,358 (-15.7%)

An unequivocal hit. At first glance the 15% drop for issue #2 looks
about normal. But it's more complicated than that, because the sales
for issue #1 are significantly boosted by re-orders. In fact, in its
first month, it only sold 100,947. And if you take that as your
comparison, it's a tiny drop for issue #2.

Incidentally, issue #1 is still picking up substantial reorders, two
months after it came out. This month, it charts at number 205 with
4,957 copies. Even if ULTIMATES had shipped in February, this would
still have been the top selling Ultimate title for the month.

6 mnth (+25.5%)
1 year (+15.1%)
2 year ( +7.6%)

The "Other" crossover is finished, but AMAZING remains way up on its
previous level. At this point, it's hard to say how much of this is
attributable to the crossover. This issue has another big selling
point, namely the debut of Spider-Man's much-hyped new costume. Ideally
we could look to the other Spider-Man titles for guidance, but FRIENDLY
didn't ship in February, and SENSATIONAL has a new creative team, which
distorts its figures as well. But SENSATIONAL is significantly up on
its pre-crossover sales, so this may be a rare crossover which has
brought in new readers who are here to stay. We'll have a better idea
next month. For the moment, this has to rank as a success.

Issue #528 picks up a further 2,392 in reorders, charting at number 262.

Two issues this month, starting the five-part "Blood of Apocalypse"
storyline. And it seems Apocalypse is still a sales draw, because sales
jump 6% on the prospect. Considering that it's the regular creative
team and there's no crossover or variant cover involved, this is
actually quite surprising.

Feb 06 Deadly Genesis #4 (of 6) - 74,666 ( -4.6%)

After an initially sluggish start, re-orders are really picking up for
DEADLY GENESIS. Presumably these are the people who didn't believe the
hype about this being an important X-Men story, but have changed their
minds now that we know what's in it.

Issue #1 ships a further 2,611 copies, four months after it originally
shipped. Issue #2 has reorders of 3,076. And issue #3 sells 4,837
extra copies. This is remarkably high reorder activity by Marvel
standards. And what's more, if it wasn't for those reorders being taken
into account, issue #4 would actually have gone slightly up from
February - very unusual for a miniseries.

This bodes well for writer Ed Brubaker's upcoming run on UNCANNY, which
spins off from this miniseries.

The Marvel Knights imprint jettisons its ongoing titles, forcing MARVEL
KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN to rename itself SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN. This is a
long overdue move, since there was really no difference of tone between
this title and the other Spider-Man books. Anyhow, it's a promising
start for the retitled book - down from last month, when it was part of
the "Other" crossover, but over 10,000 up on the regular sales of
Reginald Hudlin's run. The new creators are Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and
Angel Medina, who wouldn't normally be expected to generate such a big
sales increase. It looks very much as though the crossover has
genuinely helped this title.

Hmm. All is not well.

For one thing, that's a surprisingly big drop from the last issue.
Perhaps the delays are starting to take their toll on the book. Also,
the title is now scheduled to go on hiatus after issue #12 - an
interesting creative decision, given that issue #10 was solicited as
part 2 of 6, meaning that the storyline was supposed to run to issue
#14. It's now been cut back to a four-parter, but we've clearly
deviated from the original plan.

According to Joe Quesada, the delay is due to writer Allan Heinberg's
"other commitments." One of those "other commitments", of course, is
Heinberg's upcoming monthly run on DC's WONDER WOMAN. No doubt there's
an excellent reason why WONDER WOMAN should take priority over
completing this book on the advertised schedule, although I have no
earthly idea what it might be.

Hmm. Dropping a little faster than I'd be comfortable with, but nothing
to really worry about at this stage. Issue #2 picks up 7,754 re-orders,
which isn't actually as great as it sounds. Since these reorders still
leave us with an 18.7% second issue drop, the most likely explanation is
that Diamond simply botched the shipping of issue #2, with several
thousand copies failing to reach the shelves until the first week of
March. (X-FACTOR ships in the last week of the month.)

The beginning of "Planet Hulk". Marvel are promoting this as a massive
runaway success, which is a bit of an exaggeration. It's up
substantially on last month, but not a particularly great number in the
context of the last year. In fact, it only really looks good when you
judge it against the sales of Daniel Way's prequel arc - the whole Peter
David run outsold this issue comfortably. Don't get me wrong, it's a
good start to build on. But let's not get carried away here.

61. STORM
Feb 06 Storm #1 (of 6) - 32,831

An origin miniseries attempting to retrofit Storm and the Black Panther
with a proper reason to get married. You wouldn't generally expect
great numbers for a book like this - not only is it set in the past,
which is usually bad for sales, but it's a romance comic from the
woman's point of view, and we all know how the direct market loves
those.

That said... this is a tie-in to the Storm/Panther wedding, which is
being promoted as a very big deal. But it's actually debuted below
APOCALYPSE VS DRACULA #1 - which is also set in the past, features no
big name heroes, and was kind of shoved out there without much
promotion. And it still beat the wedding tie-in? That's not a good
sign.

137. UNDERWORLD
Feb 06 Underworld #1 (of 5) - 12,479

Oww. This is a miniseries about a Marvel Universe henchman, which means
there's no established fanbase for the character. Launched with the
obligatory lack of publicity, it was always going to crash to the lower
end of the charts. But this is disappointing even by the standards of
this type of book. A surprise, actually, because writer Frank Tieri did
unexpectedly well with his WEAPON X miniseries earlier in the year. I
thought UNDERWORLD would at least do a few thousand better than this.

Re: Monatliche Verkaufszahlen: Top 300 Issues / Top 100 TPB's

March was DC's "One Year Later" month, so you might have thought Marvel
would lay low.  But in fact, it's a surprisingly busy month.  Civil War
is going to dominate Marvel's output for the next few months, and the
first three books hit the shelves in March - NEW AVENGERS: ILLUMINATI,
FANTASTIC FOUR #536 and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #530.  It's also the start of
the Annihilation crossover, with ANNIHILATION: PROLOGUE, and BLACK
PANTHER begins the much-hyped "Bride of the Panther" storyline.

Away from the crossovers and stunts, MS MARVEL's new series begins,
SQUADRON SUPREME returns for a second season, and there's the first
issue of Joe Casey and Chris Weston's FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST FAMILY
miniseries.  THUNDERBOLTS jumps back to its original numbering to
celebrate issue #100.  And offering an alternative, if nothing else,
there's a raft of one-shots celebrating the New Universe.

All of this counter-programming appears to have worked.  Off the back of
the massively popular INFINITE CRISIS miniseries, and the surrounding
event, you'd have expected DC to have a massively successful month.  But
once again, Marvel comfortably beat them in both dollar share (38% to
32%) and unit share (a massive 43% to 34%).  And this is before Civil
War even gets properly underway...

As always, thanks to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their
figures for these calculations.

Top spot on the charts goes to INFINITE CRISIS #5, and no surprise
there.  ASTONISHING X-MEN would probably have come next, but it's on a
bimonthly schedule these days, and March was a month off.  So we move on
to...

Issue #16 picks up 2,764 reorders, which are included in the numbers
above.  It's worth mentioning that the cut-off point at the bottom end
of the charts is pretty high this month, with the number 300 book (GUN
FU: SHOWGIRLS ARE FOREVER #1) selling 2,632 copies.  That means that
there's probably some re-order activity below that point which missed
the charts altogether.

Anyhow, this is the first part of "The Collective", and the debut of
Mike Deodato.  Neither seems to have made a great deal of difference,
but NEW AVENGERS continues to sit comfortably on the top of the pile,
with sales looking comfortably solid over the last few months.

4.  NEW AVENGERS: ILLUMINATI
Mar 06  Illuminati - 107,912

And here comes Civil War, with a juggernaut first issue.  A top five
placing for the prologue, breaking the 100,000 mark, has to be a very
encouraging sign for the event ahead.  At the last count, Marvel have
announced roughly 75 Civil War crossover issues (depending on whether
you count things like the sketch book and the mock newspaper), so
they're probably rubbing their hands with glee about now.

Another Civil War crossover.  The trends on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN are a
little cloudy right now, since issues #525-528 were a crossover ("The
Other"), last month's issue #529 featured Spider-Man's new costume, and
this month starts an entire storyline tying in to Civil War.  On top of
that, thanks to a combination of variant cover sales and re-orders,
issue #529 picks up a further 22,484 sales, putting its total through
the roof.

We now find ourselves at roughly the level of "The Other" - unlike the
other Spider-Man books, which have gone down towards their normal
numbers - and Civil War probably deserves most of the credit for keeping
the numbers up.

The final Daniel Way issue before his storyline spins off into a
separate ongoing series, WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, in April.  The signs are
mixed - sales aren't exactly stellar compared with recent storylines.
But then again, it's turning around and gaining sales in mid-story,
which is unusual and therefore notable.  Issue #39 picks up re-orders of
3,037.  There seems to be some degree of buzz here, although given the
very mixed reception for ORIGINS #1, it'll be interesting to see how it
performs.

A very respectable debut.  A combination of decent promotion and some
prominent use of the character seems to have paid off, shifting a
remarkably high number for a character who until a few months ago would
have been considered very C-list indeed.  See what happens when you
promote a new launch effectively?

The former Max title SUPREME POWER is relaunched as a mainstream Marvel
book, ostensibly on the grounds that it'll get more marketing support
that way.  There's probably some truth to that, but I'm inclined to
think the sales increase is largely due to the new number #1.  The next
few months should provide a better test of the theory, once the initial

28. ANNIHILATION: PROLOGUE
Mar 06  Prologue - 61,784

The first part of the Annihilation crossover, with the miniseries
beginning in April.  A very good number when you consider that this is a
storyline built around the Silver Surfer (whose last series tanked),
Nova (whose last series didn't make it into double digits), the
Super-Skrull and Ronan the Accuser.  Without any big name creators
attached, this seems to be another example of good effective promotion.

just hovering around the mid-40K range under Ed Brubaker, and won't be
shifted.

47. MARVEL ZOMBIES
Dec 05  Marvel Zombies #1 (of 5) - 71,332
Jan 06  Marvel Zombies #2 (of 5) - 51,370  (-28.0%)
Feb 06  Marvel Zombies #3 (of 5) - 56,696  (+10.4%)
Mar 06  Marvel Zombies #4 (of 5) - 44,312  (-21.8%)

The remarkable performance of MARVEL ZOMBIES continues.  Another variant
cover of issue #1 hits the charts with a further 19,050 sales, and the
second printing of issue #3 adds another 15,532.  Meanwhile, issue #2
sells another 7,853 copies in conventional re-orders.  Once all of those
extra sales are taken into account, the numbers start to look slightly
more normal, but the reality is that this is an exceptional case of a
series which is growing from month to month and doing massive business
in re-orders and second printings.  It's a genuine hit from nowhere.

Issue #1 only sold 35,497 copies in its first month.  That means it's
now doubled its sales through re-orders - something virtually unknown
for the major publishers.  In contrast, this month MARVEL ZOMBIES
shipped 42,435 copies in re-orders alone.  Once you take issue #4 into
account, that's 86,747 extra copies of MARVEL ZOMBIES #1-4 hitting the
shelves in March.

Planet Hulk continues.  Thanks in part to a variant cover, issue #92
ships a further 12,425 copies; without those, this month's issue would
have rated as a climber.  A moderate success thus far, although sales
are still not particularly spectacular in terms of the bigger picture.

The Ellis/Granov run finally grinds to a halt.  At the rate they've been
going, IRON MAN has sold an average of 15,442 copies a month over the
last year, and they haven't exactly brought a massive amount of buzz to
the book.  It's above historical levels, but it's not exactly at the top
of the charts.  I'd class this relaunch as a failure, at least to the
extent that they must have had bigger goals in mind than this.

The jump is presumably because of the marriage storyline, since it's
hard to see any other explanation.  Mind you, it's hardly catapulted the
book up the charts, has it?  Interestingly, the wedding issue itself is
now doubling as a Civil War crossover, which seems an odd way of showing
confidence in a much-hyped event.

Returning to its original numbering, although since that includes the
completely unconnected stories at the tail-end of the first series, you
might question whether that's particularly meaningful.  A reasonable
bump for the anniversary.

Standard decline.

90. FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST FAMILY
Mar 06  First Family #1 (of 6) - 26,435

Rather disappointing numbers, I'd say, given the quality of the product.
But the project may have a healthy life in trade paperback.

92. STORM
Feb 06  Storm #1 (of 6) - 32,831
Mar 06  Storm #2 (of 6) - 25,905  (-21.1%)

A crossover with the Apocalypse storyline in X-MEN, again delivering a
boost to the runt of the X-litter.

Holding up remarkably well in its new format.  I'd assumed that the book

like I was wrong.

who clearly has a much more loyal fanbase than I realised.

Surely coasting towards cancellation.

From here on down, it's cancelled books, disastrously low-selling
miniseries, and the occasional lucky book that dreams of a better
afterlife in digest format.  Abandon hope all ye who enter here.

220. MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX
Feb 06  But He Said He Loved Me - 7,070
Mar 06              Guys & Doll - 6,150  (-13.0%)

For some reason, this miniseries of redialogued romance comics is
changing its title with every issue.  Horrid numbers, and while I'd
initially thought this might have a healthy afterlife as a humour book,
the two issues to date have been sufficiently laden with comic fandom
injokes to sink that idea.

Off the back of the massively popular INFINITE CRISIS miniseries, and the surrounding event, you'd have expected DC to have a massively successful month.  But once again, Marvel comfortably beat them in both dollar share (38% to 32%) and unit share (a massive 43% to 34%).  And this is before Civil War even gets properly underway... Ha! Take This... DC!
